Brenda MacIntyre

Born in Calgary and raised in B.C., Brenda MacIntyre moved to Toronto in 1985 and quickly earned a reputation as rap artist “Special Ice.” At the time, Florida’s Moods International Records was looking for fresh hip hop talent. The result: Brenda a.k.a. Special Ice’s first hit single “Non Stopping Hip Hopping” entered the Florida charts as a “hot new item” neck in neck with Aretha Franklin’s “Ain’t Nobody Ever Love You,” and enjoyed high rotation on North Miami’s Top 40 station WPOW 96FM.

Back in Toronto Brenda teamed up with The Parachute Club’s Billy Bryans, who produced her 2nd single “Rock A Talk,” featuring Charles Sinclair (Odel, Messenjah) on bass and Devon “Mr. Metro” Martin on keys. The single appeared on the Juno Award winning CD “The Gathering,” released by Attic Records at the Opera House in 1991.

The dominant influence of hip hop (rap) on black music in 1990 and 1991 encouraged Carla Marshall, Devon Martin, Special Ice, and others in Toronto, to work in the 'raggamuffin' or 'ragga' style.
